Description
This cameo is set in an 18 karat gold pin.

Zeus was the main divinity of the Greek pantheon, identified in Homer .as both 'father', and 'lord' or 'king' of the numerous other divinities. Though assuming many different identities, for instance Zeus Meilichios or protector of families, he is most often personified as he is on this exquisite cameo--a fatherly figure endowed with great wisdom. His long beard is beautifully curled, and so is his flowing hair under the wreath of laurel. The image is perfect for a deity once seen as a 'Saviour' who received dedications and prayers from individuals and entire towns. As a religious figure Zeus no longer has relevance, but as an image in art he is as impressive as ever.
